One time I was with the guys from my life group and we decided to have our small fellowship at a restaurant so we could have dinner and catch up with one another at the same time. So we went and placed our orders, shared our stories, prayed for one another and asked God to continue to bless us and our families wherever they are.
Normally when our group ate out, we would split the check so everyone would be able to share. But that particular night was different. When we asked for our bill, the waiter told us that someone already paid for our dinner. We asked him who did it so we could at least thank him. But he told us that the stranger didn’t want to give his name. He just asked for our bill, paid it and left. All of us were surprised.
It’s been many years since that happened and until now we still have no idea who the generous man was.
Every time I remember this, I think about how God sent his son to pay for our sins. Even without us knowing about it. Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
The bill has been paid. All we have to do is accept and enjoy the free gift of salvation. More than just a free dinner, He gave us a free pass to eternal life. That’s how generous our God is.
